Small Murders Under the Sea
March 30 - April 24, 2010
Reception: Saturday, April 3rd, 2-6 pm
Ceres Gallery is pleased to announce Ethelyn Honig's exhibition, “Small Murders Under the Sea”. These paintings and objects address careless human habits which are causing destruction to marine life.
Honig's eccentric works depict her love of the unusual structures of these biomorphic organisms. Single cells mingle with crustaceans amid reefs. They huddle, they float, they hang out or are wounded and bleed. These are not “pictures”; they are studies of real and imagined forms.
Her position as an artist is that of an anguished observer bearing witness to sea creatures as an invisible community or government under siege.
On a trip to inspect coral reefs she wandered along a pristine nineteen-mile stretch of beach in Central America. She rummaged amidst a surprising number of piles of rubbish washed ashore, tangled in dry seaweed. She photographed and sketched hypodermic needles, sneakers and many things plastic; dolls, bags, sun tan lotion, medicine bottles and massive lengths of rope from around the world. Some came from surrounding shores some from cruise ships. If it were not an environmental warning it could be seen as a beautiful mess.
Researching the Internet, she discovered the astounding “Eastern Garbage Patch “located in the North Pacific Ocean which is so named because it’s an endless gyre of swirling water containing plastic flotsam which has become the magnitude of an area twice the size of Texas. Also she discovered that the Crown of Thorns Starfish have eaten one third of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. They have grown to enormous proportions due to excessive soil enrichment for farming which runs out to sea.

I think they might have made a serious of long colored squares ,in colored sequence ,in different sizes then sewed them together around branches trunk etc.----------- or they had one thousand third world people who could climb trees sit there and crochet pieces, for one year --------------- or Harry Potter did it --------------- or that it is a tree that was recently discovered in a remote area of the Amazon ------------- or it was done by talented terrorist who did not want to make bombs --------------- or it is part of a world wide movement to protect trees from the ozone fall out (new statistics ) -------------------- whoever did this is trying to get help in the name of ART! ------------ or this is the beginning of a project to cover all the threes growing on the south slope of Annapurna in the Himalayas ------------ or according to the Seventh Day Advent Church it is the sign that they have been waiting for after it happens they will not be able to proselytize --------------- or its Tibetan Prayer Flags that just went to far --------------- or the tree was done in the institute for long term craft syndrome ------------ or it is part of a message left in Mexico City to cheer them up after the Day of The Dead ---------------- or it is the product of many obsessive compulsive personalities ------------------- it was done to see if they could protect that tree from spreading the deadly tent caterpillar (you known confuse it !) ------------------- these are all of the things I thought of but are probably not right ! ------- if you have any ideas please feel free to e-mail me !!!!!!
