Welcome to Antanetiambo Nature Reserve, a small locally managed forest set in the lush ricefields of the Andapa basin. Mandrosoa!
Just six kilometers from downtown Andapa, Antanetiambo Nature Reserve offers visitors an opportunity to learn about the cultural values and practices of the Tsimihety people while observing endemic wildlife in the Andapa countryside. Visitors planning excursions to nearby Marojejy National Park or Anjanaharibe-Sud Special Reserve, or even those making a day trip to Andapa, will enjoy this unique and intimate glimpse at local traditions and biodiversity.
Visitors to Antanetiambo experience the Reserve guided by one of the region’s foremost wildlife guides and environmental enthusiasts, Mr. Rabary Désiré. Tours may be conducted in English, French, or Malagasy. Antanetiambo is family managed and visitors are encouraged to stay and share a traditional meal prepared by Mrs. Valerie Doko at the family’s home in Matsobe.

The Antanetiambo staff is happy to accommodate visitors’ specific interests by designing a personalized visit. A range of possible activities includes: searching for bamboo lemurs in the Reserve, birdwatching, a traditional picnic at the family’s “antsiraka” hut, learning traditional rice and other farming practices, or spending an afternoon fishing in the river at Belaoka village. Vanilla
Antanetiambo is located in a region which is world-renown for its vanilla. The vanilla cultivated here in the Andapa Basin and Lokoho River Valley is entirely organic and of extremely high quality. Several families around Antanetiambo are now marketing this vanilla directly to overseas buyers. Because there are no middlemen, your purchase helps support local farmers through fair trade. In addition, a portion of all sales is designated for conservation purposes in and around Antanetiambo, helping to protect and preserve this unique environment. DAKAR, Oct 28 (OneWorld) - A self-educated naturalist from Madagascar has been awarded a prestigious international prize after spending almost all the money he's ever earned to purchase and protect endangered tropical forest.
At the award ceremony earlier this month, Rabary Désiré announced he would use the $10,000 prize money to reforest denuded landscapes near his home in Madagascar's Andapa valley, build up eco-tourism infrastructure, and purchase more land around the Antanetiambo nature reserve, which he created entirely with his own funds, bit by bit over the past 10 years.
Antanetiambo means "on the high hill." The private reserve "sticks out dramatically as a small island of forest in a sea of rice fields," says Seacology, the California-based non-profit that awarded its annual prize to Désiré this year.
